New hydrogen pipeline proposals set to transform East Midlands industry

Plans have been unveiled for a large-scale hydrogen pipeline that could transform how energy is supplied to industry across the East Midlands and the Humber region.

The proposed H2East Pipeline would create a new hydrogen transport route between the two locations. The infrastructure would support manufacturers across sectors such as steel, chemicals, food production and construction materials to move away from natural gas and towards low-carbon hydrogen.

The project is being delivered by Cadent and forms part of a wider, coordinated approach to hydrogen infrastructure on the east coast. Through collaboration with National Gas and Northern Gas Networks, the H2East programme aims to connect hydrogen production and storage with industrial demand and power generation, helping to build a functioning hydrogen market at scale.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, highlighted the role the pipeline could play in regional growth, saying:

The H2East Pipeline: Humber to Nottinghamshire represents exactly the kind of ambitious investment that sits at the heart of our East Midlands Growth Plan.

A key feature of the proposals is the connection to HyMarnham Energy Park in Nottinghamshire, a site expected to play a central role in green hydrogen production. This forms part of the wider Trent Supercluster, which brings together multiple clean energy projects across former coal-fired power station sites along the River Trent.
