World’s first commercial hydrogen brick plant takes shape in UK

The UK is set to deliver a landmark project with plans for the world’s first commercial-scale hydrogen-fired brick plant.

Wienerberger UK & Ireland will retrofit two kilns at its Denton site, replacing over 200 natural gas burners with hydrogen systems. The upgrade also includes new hydrogen supply infrastructure and enhanced control systems, while keeping the existing kiln structures in place. Backed by government funding, the project reflects growing momentum behind hydrogen as a solution for high-temperature manufacturing.

Hydrogen will be supplied under a long-term agreement, supporting a phased transition. Initial hydrogen use is targeted for 2027, with full conversion expected from 2028.

Once operational, the site is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining product quality and output. The project is also designed as a scalable model for wider adoption across the ceramics sector.

Alongside parallel investment in electrification, the development highlights how hydrogen can support a broader mix of technologies to help industry move towards net zero.
