Reflecting on 2025: A Year of Growth, Innovation and Industry Leadership
As we look back on 2025, it is clear that the year was defined by progress, collaboration and a continued commitment to supporting the gas industry's role in delivering a safe, secure and sustainable energy future.
From membership growth and professional development to policy engagement, technical standards, events and industry communications, IGEM continued to support its members while representing the interests of the wider sector.
Supporting a growing membership
Membership continued to grow throughout 2025, particularly across Engineering Technician (EngTech), Gas Technician and Associate grades. During the year, IGEM supported 146 professionals in achieving
EngTech, IEng and CEng registration, helping to strengthen competence and professionalism across the industry.
Alongside professional registration support, the Institution delivered assessor training, webinars and member guidance, accredited Wales & West Utilities' Graduate Development Programme, and recorded strong engagement with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. Scholarships, grants and awards also continued to support future talent entering the profession.
Representing the industry and influencing policy
Throughout the year, IGEM continued to engage with government, regulators and policymakers to ensure engineering expertise and evidence remained at the heart of energy policy discussions.
One of the year's most significant achievements was the launch of the Green Gas Taskforce, bringing together organisations from across the sector to champion the role of biomethane in the UK's energy future. Early successes included the extension of the Green Gas Support Scheme to 2030 and increased recognition of biomethane's long-term potential.
IGEM also continued its engagement with DESNZ, NESO and parliamentary groups, contributing evidence-based input on hydrogen, clean heat, energy planning and the future role of gas in a low-carbon energy system.
Leading through technical excellence
Technical standards and engineering leadership remained central to IGEM's work in 2025.
Significant progress was made in the development and revision of standards supporting the energy transition, including hydrogen transmission standards and the new Hydrogen Quality Standard. The Institution also continued its involvement in major research and innovation projects designed to support the safe deployment of hydrogen technologies.
The Hydrogen Knowledge Centre continued to grow as a trusted industry resource, surpassing 7,500 technical resources and attracting thousands of users each month.
Bringing the industry together
IGEM's programme of conferences, lectures, training courses and events continued to provide valuable opportunities for learning, networking and knowledge exchange.
The Policy Conference, Gas Utilisation Conference, Gas Industry Awards and Annual Conference all attracted strong engagement, while attendance at the Policy Conference increased by approximately 40% and the Annual Conference achieved another year of record growth.
The launch of the updated Beach to Burner training course further demonstrated IGEM's commitment to supporting both new entrants and experienced professionals across the gas sector.
Sharing industry knowledge
Throughout 2025, IGEM's communications channels continued to connect, inform and engage members across the industry.
LinkedIn experienced significant growth, with audience numbers increasing by 17% and engagement rising by 51%. The launch of Sph2ere also proved highly successful, quickly establishing itself as a recognised platform for hydrogen news and insight.
Gas International, Gas Utilisation and Historic Gas Times continued to provide members with technical content, industry news and thought leadership, while member contributions helped showcase innovation and expertise from across the sector.
Strengthening our community
Creating an inclusive and supportive professional community remained a key focus throughout the year.
IGEM continued to deliver against its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy through awareness events, training, surveys and new initiatives, including the introduction of Refugee Membership. Additional work focused on neurodiversity awareness, inclusive workplace practices and supporting member wellbeing.
These initiatives reflect IGEM's commitment to ensuring that the profession remains welcoming, representative and accessible for current and future generations.
Supporting the downstream sector
The downstream sector remained a vital part of IGEM's activity throughout 2025.
The Gas Utilisation Conference continued to provide a dedicated platform for downstream professionals, while the Large Business Forum supported collaboration on safety, technical guidance and industry best practice.
Gas Utilisation (GU) also continued to play an important role in sharing downstream expertise, with growing demand for utilisation-focused content highlighting the importance of this area across the industry.
