Project Name: Sanderstead Hill
Scheme background: This project formed part of Croydon Council’s resurfacing programme and was undertaken jointly by SGN and WCB within the London Borough of Croydon.
Between scheduled coordination meetings with WCB and Croydon Council, additional progress meetings
were held to maintain momentum and ensure all parties were clear on their respective roles and
responsibilities throughout the works.
The need for the project was identified through Croydon Council’s resurfacing scheme. SGN subsequently
initiated works to carry out essential gas main and service replacements, allowing the council’s resurfacing
activities to follow immediately upon completion. An early start permit was granted by Croydon Council to
facilitate this collaboration and minimise disruption.
The project commenced on 5th August and was completed on 14th August, taking approximately 10 days in
total. During this period, SGN/WCB installed 111 metres of 125mm PE and 89 metres of 180mm PE main. All
gas services within the scope of the project were renewed. A vacuum excavator (Vac Ex) was utilised for all
service and connection excavations to ensure a safe and efficient operation.
Upon completion of the gas works, SGN carried out temporary backfilling and reinstatement of excavations,
allowing Croydon Council’s resurfacing works to proceed seamlessly thereafter.
The project required close communication and coordination between multiple stakeholders to ensure timely
delivery.
