Project Name: Parchmore Road
Scheme background: The project formed part of the SGN / FFU gas main replacement programme and was delivered alongside Croydon Council’s resurfacing scheme within the London Borough of Croydon.
In addition to scheduled conference calls with FFU and Croydon Council, SGN held further coordination
meetings to maintain project momentum and ensure that all parties clearly understood their respective roles
and responsibilities.
This scheme was initially identified through Croydon Council’s resurfacing programme. SGN subsequently
developed a project to undertake essential gas main and service replacements, allowing Croydon Council to
carry out resurfacing works immediately after the gas infrastructure works were completed. To facilitate this
coordination, Croydon Council granted SGN an early start permit.
The project commenced on 4 August 2025 and was successfully completed on 17 November 2025.
As part of the works, SGN and FFU:
Abandoned 375.5 metres of existing ductile iron and cast-iron gas mains in various sizes (8", 6", 4", and
100mm / 200mm).
Installed 369.5 metres of 180mm PE main and 6 metres of 90mm PE main.
Renewed all associated gas services along the route.
A vacuum excavator (vac-ex) was used to safely excavate all service and connection holes. Following
installation, SGN carried out temporary backfilling and reinstatement, allowing Croydon Council’s resurfacing
works to follow immediately after completion of the gas replacement works.
During the project, a major water leak occurred on a Thames Water 12-inch main, which created ongoing
challenges for SGN’s replacement activities. This situation ultimately led to close collaboration between
organisations, including the sharing and coordinated use of a road closure, helping to minimise disruption and
maintain project progress.
