Project Name: Chelsfield Road

Scheme background: The project was delivered as a joint scheme between SGN and JDT as part of the London Borough of Bromley’s resurfacing programme. The works were located within the London Borough of Bromley and were
initially identified through Bromley Council’s resurfacing schedule. In response, SGN developed a project to
undertake essential gas main and service replacements, enabling Bromley Council to carry out resurfacing
works immediately following completion of the gas infrastructure works. Bromley Council granted the necessary
permits to allow the scheme to progress efficiently.

In addition to the planned conference calls between SGN and JDT, further coordination meetings were held
with Bromley Council to maintain project momentum and ensure that roles and responsibilities across all
organisations were clearly defined.

The project commenced on 5 January 2026 and was completed on 3 March 2026, with the works delivered
over a total programme duration of 57 days.

During the works, SGN and JDT carried out a combination of decommissioning, live insertion, and open-cut
installation, completing a total of 287 metres of polyethylene (PE) gas mains in sizes 125mm and 75mm. In
addition, 285 metres of existing 4-inch and 6-inch cast iron (CI) mains were abandoned. All gas services along
the route were renewed as part of the scheme.

A vacuum excavator (vac-ex) was used to excavate all service and connection holes, helping to minimise
disruption and reduce the risk of damaging other underground utilities. Temporary backfilling and reinstatement
were undertaken by SGN, with permanent resurfacing works carried out immediately afterwards as part of
Bromley Council’s programme.

During the project, Thames Water utilised the road closure established for the gas works to install a new water
connection, as required by Bromley Council. This collaborative approach helped minimise additional disruption
to the network and local community.
