IGEM appointed as the new Standard Setting Body for the downstream gas industry

The Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) is pleased to announce its appointment as the new provider of the Standard Setting Body (SSB) function for the downstream gas industry from April 2026. This appointment reflects the trust placed in IGEM to lead, strengthen and modernise the governance, consultation, and development of gas competency standards that underpin the safety of the UK gas industry.

As the newly appointed SSB provider, IGEM will oversee the Strategic Management Board, Standards Consultation Forum, Technical Working Groups and Standards Development Unit. In doing so, IGEM will ensure that Matters of Gas Safety (MoGS) criteria, IGEM/IG/1, Training Specifications, and Mandatory Technical Competencies continue to reflect current legislation, industry innovation and best practice. IGEM remains focussed on maintaining the rigorous, transparent processes required to sustain public confidence in gas safety while supporting the sector through future challenges and opportunities.

“We require engineers to both meet and comply with SSB-defined rules standards. We look forward to working with IGEM to ensure the continued integrity and robustness of UK gas competency standards, supporting the long‑term safety of the sector.”

Rob Denman, Director of Gas Services at Gas Safe Register

IGEM would like to thank Energy & Utility Skills (EUS), for their support in a smooth handover, and whose stewardship of the Standard Setting Body function over many years has made a lasting contribution to the industry. Their commitment to maintaining high standards of competence, their leadership across collaborative forums, and their support for employers, awarding organisations and gas professionals have been instrumental in maintaining a trusted and effective framework for gas safety. IGEM acknowledges the strong foundations they have built and is committed to honouring and building upon this legacy ensuring the standards remain robust and industry led.

“With this appointment, IGEM reaffirms its commitment to serving the gas industry with independence, technical excellence, and a steadfast focus on safety. We look forward to deepening engagement with all stakeholders, from employers and engineers to regulators, awarding organisations and training bodies; to ensure that the UK’s competence standards continue to evolve in line with emerging technologies, new regulations, and the changing needs of the energy landscape.”

Oliver Lancaster, Chief Executive Officer, Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers

IGEM is proud to take forward this important national function and to continue championing the professionalism and competence that underpin safe gas work in the UK.
